Why Insulate
How can I improve my existing attic insulation?

Use Radiant barrier insulation or Foil insulation. The most affordable and easiest to install is the High R series. High R insulation has an R-value of 14.5; compare that to convention al insulation.

There are several ways to install foil insulation in attics. One is commonly known as attic floor application, where the radiant barrier insulation lays directly on top of the existing conventional foam insulation in your attic. Make sure the reflective side is up. Other ways include attaching the radiant barrier near the roof, either the bottom surfaces of the attic truss chords, directly on the rafters or the underside of the roof deck.

If you are building a new roof, apply the foil insulation over the tops of the rafters before adding the roof deck. This is a great way to insulate during the building process.

How to determine which insulation to get. Look for the R-value - The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. High R Double Sided Foil Insulation has a consistent 14.5 R value. Compare that to fiberglass blanket insulation with half the R-Value. It has been shown that Fiberglass blanket insulation can also lose more than half it's R value in humid areas.
